The temptation of assumptions

One fine morning, I was supposed to go for a meeting at 9:30 AM. I started from my place very early and reached exactly by 9:30, only to get terrified by knowing that I reached a wrong place! That day I was late to the meeting by nearly 30 minutes and it was the most awkward moment when I entered the hall. This incident happened only because I assumed that I knew the venue and I took it for granted without confirming from anyone. All of us, some day or the other face this moment. But what makes us assume things so easily? Is it because of the blind trust that we have on our conscious or we are just over confident? It may be for any reason, but assumptions can prove disastrous! How many times in our daily conversations do we come across the statement “I know what you mean”? We assume a lot of things everyday without confirming, even though we know that it may become disastrous if it is wrong! I agree that making assumptions is very tempting. Whenever we get tempted to assume things, just think of the fact that it can lead us to an awkward situation. After all, “mistakes can not only be learned from our experiences. We can also learn them from others experiences! Keep tracking this space to understand how to avoid assumptions. Article by:  Divya Shalini. ML&D Associate,HR Footprints Management Services Pvt. Personal Development

Who are you including in your inner-circle?

This question is relevant in general to everyone; and in particular, more relevant for a leader. Why is it relevant to everyone? You are influenced quite a bit by the people that you frequently interact with. Your thoughts, attitudes and general outlook will be shaped by the interactions that we have with those who are close to us. Therefore, it is important to pay attention to the kind of people that we network with and entertain proximity. Why is it more relevant to a leader? As a leader, you will tend to provide greater access to those who are in your inner circle.  They enjoy greater freedom to express to you. You may in turn trust them more and delegate more. As the relationship further deepens with the inner circle, they may become your channel to communicate with those who are beyond the this circle. You will see the world based on the information provided by these people.  In the process, those who are in the outer circle tend to feel distanced from you as a leader. They may wonder what are the criteria for inclusion in the inner circle. Traps to Avoid Depending upon the type of people that are included in the inner circle, tone can anticipate the likely effectiveness of the team as well as the leader. Watch out those leaders who may take a liking to those who always say YES to them; who are obedient and submissive; or who are like the leaders; or who are not more competent than the leaders. While leaders may find it easy to manage such a circle, it will soon have its negative impact on the overall effectiveness of the leadership! What is wrong if a leader has an inner-circle?

There is a general political connotation for ‘inner-circle’ and ‘outer-circle’ in organizations. Someone who is considered to be in the inner-circle of the leader is perceived as someone who has done some manipulation to become a part of the coterie.   But let us admit; as human beings don’t we take a liking towards some people and feel more at ease with them? What is wrong if we find such comfort in interpersonal relationships? What is wrong if leaders also experience same preferences to work with certain type of team members?  The people inside the inner-circle of the leader will surely experience greater access; increasing delegation, freedom and empowerment; they enjoy greater trust. All of this will result in greater alignment and a more comfortable working environment. So, what is wrong in having an inner circle?  It is true that those who end up in the outside the inner-circle may experience differential treatment; they may not feel trusted; they may feel alienated.  But they need to realize that most of the members start in the outer circle and find their way into the inner-circle over a period of time. What can you do about it if you are in the outer circle?  Followers need to understand what leader expects from them and to what extent they can align; if they demonstrate such aligned behavior consistently, they can find a path into the inner circle.  On the part of the leaders, it is important that they do not over-discriminate the outer-circle people. They need to still treat them with dignity and help them to align better.  While time will determine who will be in the inner and outer circles, opportunity to work towards the inner-circle must be available for all! Leadership Effectiveness – Quality of Leader-Follower Relationship

It is always known that the leader’s competence has a bearing on the leadership effectiveness in delivering business results. The focus, drive and ability of the leader have a bearing on the overall result. However, at a deeper level, it is interesting to note the impact that a follower can have on a leader’s effectiveness. Yes, follower’s investment in to the relationship with the leader is crucial foundation for leadership effectiveness. What i mean to say is that leader follower relationship is important for leadership to be effective. Imagine a relationship between the leader and follower flowing smoothly; it will facilitate more trusting interactions, which will speed up the business functioning. On the contrary, if there is a rift or complexity in the relationship, then energy will be focused more on maintaining the relationship than on smooth and speedy performance. Who should take the onus in building the leader-follower relationship?  The answer is an obvious one: BOTH.  At the beginning of an association, leader can help the follower in understanding the expected behavior. Follower then have to make efforts to see how many of those expectations can be met. By placing right efforts, the follower is gaining the trust of the leader. The relationship will then stabilize; the follower will experience greater freedom and empowerment (while of course, some followers may fall out with the leader). The relationship will mature over a period; it will result in greater commitment, growth and mutual respect & concern. The whole spirit will be one of ‘winning together’!  Article By: Dr. Raj;  CEO, HR Footprints Management Services Pvt. Ltd.  Follow Dr. Raj on Twitter @drraj29
